EDUCATION &
QUALIFICATIONS: 
           
Four years of Grammar School in England and three years of High School in Scotland,
gaining passes in both 'O' and 'A' levels. Entered an Apprenticeship in Architecture in June 1965 and attended Technical College and Art School for Building Design & Technology.

Accepted as a Probationer of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in the same year and completed parts one and two of the Intermediate Examination by means of External Testimonies over the next three years.

In 1978 became a Senior Surveying Technician by satisfying the admission requirements and becoming an Associate Member of the Society of Surveying Technicians. On arrival in Canada in 1981 applied for, and was accepted for membership to Construction Specifications Canada; currently serving as Student Liaison Officer on the Executive Sub Committee of CSC Toronto Chapter.

In 2003 I became an accredited Member of the Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario (AATO) and served on the Executive Board of the Governing Council since 2005. Served one term as President from 2009 to 2011 and am now in my second term as President from April 2017 to April 2019. I also am the Chair of the College and Faculty Liaison Committee, with Student Liaison Committee under my watch.

Since 2002, I became a member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) and the Ontario Building Envelope Council (OBEC). In 2006 I became a member of the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC). I served on the Executive Board of OBEC and served on the business development steering committee of the CaGBC, Toronto Chapter. More recently I became a member of the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) and the Ontario Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and have passed their Professional Practice Examination and am now a certified Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.). In the summer of 2012 I became an Associate Member of the Ontario Association of Applied Architectural Sciences and October 30, 2012 I became a Technologist OAAAS, passed the entrance examination in the July 2013 and became a Licensed Technologist OAA in November 2016. 

SKILLS & ABILITY:   
           
Excellent communication and administration skills. Very high standard of draftsmanship with sound design, presentation and extensive technical knowledge. In addition to excellent freehand drafting and rendering ability, I have had many years experience in CADD, getting my initial training on Intergraph in 1985. Developed my skills in AutoCAD R11 through R14 & 2000, currently working on an AutoCAD 2005 platform and now reviewing AutoCAD 2009. A good understanding of other computer programmes including Excel, Photoshop and PowerPoint.
 
Fully conversant with the UK Building Regulations, the Ontario Building Code, Building Code Act, Local Municipal By Laws and Zoning requirements. Successfully completed OBC part 9 courses in Health & Safety and Building Envelope, Structural Requirements, HVAC & Fire Protection, OBC part 3 courses in Classification & Construction and Health & Safety and the Legal & Process Examination and am now certified as Building Code Qualified. In addition I have also obtained passes in House, Small, Large & Complex Buildings, HVAC, Building Services, Building Structural, Detection Lighting and Power, Fire Protection and Plumbing All Buildings and On Site Sewage. I am registered with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing as a qualified designer and design firm in compliance with Bill 124 and Ontario Building Code and my registration numbers are BCIN # 20550 & 27003. Recently completed a Certificate course in Building Science at the University of Toronto that lead to my designation BSSO (Building Science Specialist of Ontario). Recently took LEED workshops and a LEED course at the U of T.

Concentrating on high end quality renovations and new build housing with some light commercial and mercantile projects throughout Toronto and Southern Ontario. Have worked in the past in association with such organizations as Talo Architects, Gabor + Popper, Kellner Fine Homes, Rhona Slomovic of RGS Design, Janet Rosenberg, Robert Dirstein, Gordon Ridgely, Alex Chapman, WZMH and many other design professionals.

Architectural Project Manager responsible for design development, 3D models, perspective renderings, construction drawings and details. Site supervision and contract administration on various projects including luxury custom homes, condominiums, stacked town houses, sub division housing, retail stores and resort complexes. Carry out building surveys and prepare measured drawings on various historical buildings.

Resident Project Manager and Design Coordinator for a luxury 6000 sq. ft. $2,500,000, single family dwelling house in midtown Toronto, designed by Gordon Ridgely Architects Inc.

Invited back for a second contract as Job captain, to work on several luxury residential projects. The work included design development, construction drawings, consultant coordination, client meetings and full on site supervision of work in progress.

Jun.85 to Jun.86:     Giffels Associates,  Architects & Engineers, 30 International Blvd. Rexdale,

Senior Architectural Designer responsible for the preparation of construction drawings and complicated detailing on both Institutional and Automotive Buildings. Acquired my initial and extensive training in Intergraph and AutoCAD computer aided drafting.

Senior Architectural Assistant, design development for several Grade II listed buildings in central London, which required complete rehabilitation and conversion into luxury apartments with a resale
value in excess of three million pounds.

Jul.84 to Dec.84       Webb Zerafa Menkes Housden Partnership, 95 St.Clair Ave. West, Toronto,

Senior Architectural Technologist, contracted to prepare working drawings and details for three projects, an administration and training facility at Metro Toronto Zoo, a mixed retail, commercial and residential complex in downtown Toronto and the commencement of working drawings for a Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Returned to London and was invited to rejoin Hunter + Partners to assist in rebuilding the drawing office for their newly formed architectural practice including the recruiting of staff and the reintroduction of procedures & protocols. Worked on several renovation projects including some sheltered housing for the aged and disabled.

While working for Hunter + Partners, I was invited by Charles Lawrence and David Wrightson (long time colleagues), to assist them on a part time basis on design development and preparation of working drawings for a major housing project in inner London for Barratts.

First Career opportunity within the manufacturing sector of the industry, employed as a senior draftsman responsible for the production of shop and fabrication drawings for curtain wall, aluminum windows, doors and skylight framing. Promoted to design engineering and estimation departments, involved in solving product application and design of custom dies for new extrusions.

First employment in Canada as a Senior Architectural Technologist. Involved in working drawings for several large projects including a nine storey office building in New Brunswick,  retrofit work to Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, a church in downtown Toronto and preparation of complete tenancy drawings for Page & Steele's own move to new premises.

With the decline of new build projects in the mid seventies I chose to diversify my experience and accepted an offer of employment with the above company. Initially employed to carry out measured surveys, produce existing drawings, sketch schemes and feasibility studies, working drawings and details. Promoted to Senior Surveying Technician and Drawing Office Manager with an overall administrative responsibility for eight technicians and external consultants.

Sept.70 to May 75     J.E.Lesser (Construction) Ltd. Staines Road, Hounslow, Middlesex.

Initially employed as a contract draftsman, then joined the staff as a Senior Architectural Designer providing essential 'back up' to the Sales Team on 'Design & Build' packages. My responsibilities included conceptual design, client liaison and coordination with the production dept. on many projects including factories, warehouses, medical centres, hospitals schools, hotels, motels and public houses, supermarkets, office blocks, computer centres and various government buildings throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Middle East.

Aug.69 to Aug.70    James Cubitt, Fello Aitkinson & Partners, Architects, London, England.

A twelve month contract as Assistant to the Resident Architect on a multi-million pounds Pharmaceutical Complex for Hofman La Roche in Ayrshire, Scotland. Responsibilities included continual on site supervision, drawing coordination and 'on site' detailing, regular liaison with the Contractor, Sub-Contractors, Structural Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Safety  Officers and Clients' Representatives.

As an Architectural Assistant, I was involved in basic design, sketch proposals, working drawings and detailing, some job running and site supervision on various projects including luxury housing, hostels, office buildings, and ship yard facilities for the Upper Clyde Ship Builders.

Commenced as Architectural Apprentice, involved in carrying out measured surveys and preparing working drawings on various projects including schools, hospitals, petrol stations, supermarkets and department stores under the direct supervision of Mr. Davie.

PERSONAL:                           

Born in London, England on August 20th.1947. Educated in London to the age of fifteen, moved to Scotland where I completed my education and obtained my first employment. Returned to London in 1970 and worked there successfully up to my departure to Canada in July 1981.

I am married with two grown daughters and since my arrival, have lived and worked here in Toronto, with the exception of a few return working contracts to the United Kingdom in the early eighties and a recent tour of duty in 2001/2. I have both British and Canadian Citizenship and hold valid passports and driving licences for both.

I am currently the President of SERRA (South Eglinton Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association) and seriously considering getting involved in local politics.
               
HOBBIES & INTERESTS:  
                         
Enjoy sport in general, playing golf, swimming and walking. Like to listen to classical & jazz 
music, enjoy gourmet cooking, wining and dining. D.I Y. and home decorating. Appreciate fine art and antiques. Occasionally dabble in sketching, painting and photography as a pleasurable pastime.
